“Well, I think that was successful,” Alice chimed as she stepped up to the go-fish booth.

Penny handed Benedict a fishing pole before she grabbed the box of tickets kids had passed her all afternoon. The sun was warm, and her cheeks felt a little burned, but the day had been perfect. “I think so. Look at all these tickets!”

People could purchase five tickets for a dollar or fifty for five dollars. Based on the number of tickets in Penny and Benedict’s box, the carnival had raised a sizable amount before even counting the money from the corporate sponsors.

“Yes.” Alice waved her hand at the box of tickets. “I’m sure we raised a decent sum for the maternity wing, but I meant it was successful because Dr. Cooke got to live through the afternoon. That man is such an insufferable, whiny brat.”

Benedict chuckled as he stepped next to Penny and put his arm around her waist. Penny leaned into him. The social media team had taken their picture a few times over the course of the carnival, but the camera had disappeared an hour ago.

The initial glow of the doctor and the nurse who’d helped a baby on the metro was waning. Their photos were still loaded onto the social media pages, but now there were other stories the team added too. Penny didn’t mind. Particularly because Benedict’s touches, like this simple one, felt so natural. Like it was just for her. No camera, no team to impress, no ulterior motive they were working toward. And she enjoyed it.

A bit too much.

“I suspect Dr. Cooke is very used to getting his way and when someone challenges that—” Benedict gestured to Alice and nodded “—he acts like a bully or a baby.”

“Or both.” Alice put her hands on her hips, took a deep breath, and then relaxed a bit. “On the bright side, I’ve got a date tonight with the photographer who was too focused on the two of you, according to Dr. Cooke. Nice guy. Bet I end up on some of those social media posts.”

“You are very photogenic.”

“Yes, I am, Dr. Denbar.” Alice paused, holding her sister’s gaze for just a moment. “Though my sister looks just as good in front of a camera. She’s just less likely to step in front of it.”

Benedict and Alice’s banter caught Penny off guard. She felt her mouth fall open as she looked at her sister’s happy face.

He squeezed Penny and kissed the top of her head before, adding, “She is something special.”

“Yes. She is,” Alice confirmed.

What was going on here?

Penny knew Alice had said she’d not antagonize Benedict or Penny over their... The word for whatever was going on between them failed to materialize. This didn’t feel like it had a deadline anymore. But she’d been misled by her emotions before.

Still, watching Alice joke with Benedict warmed her heart. So much hope danced around her belly, mixing with the butterflies that had only intensified the closer she got to the man beside her.
